Minutes

Present: Lorraine Woodruff-Long (SF PAL), Chuck Collins (YMCA), Jim Wachob (MTA), Miriam Alper (CHDP), Audrey Roderick (Urban Sprouts), Chuck Yeo (Cheryl Burke Dance), Kim Durandet (Planning), Amy Portello Nelson (DCYF), Christina Goette (DPH), Marianne Szeto (Shape Up SF)

Background on Shape Up SF

  • Not focused on childhood obesity specifically but rather the longer term outcomes of chronic disease prevention and eliminating health disparities
  • Primary prevention using environmental perspective
  • Changing norms achieved using a multi-pronged approach
4 strategies: policy and advocacy; awareness and education; programs and events; data and research
4 environments in which we do our work: neighborhoods; schools/after school/child care; worksites; clinics

Need for retreat

  • The monthly coalition/network meetings are changing. There are other areas taking off – Physical Activity Council, Sunday Streets, Southeast Food Access Working Group (SEFA), work in school food, Soda Free Summer, Walking Challenge etc.

How do we bring all this work together to create a stronger and more cohesive initiative?

Discussion

  • How does SEFA or the PAC identify with Shape Up?
  • How do we ensure the political stability and consistency of this work will endure?
  • National Park Service is on the verge of merging their mission with health. There are many aligned “owners” of Shape Up. How do we make Shape Up a park of something larger?
  • How durable is the brand of Shape Up?

Format of retreat

  • Tentative date: September 3 (before Labor Day weekend) – wait until September to see how things settle after budget changes. Libby has left DCYF for a job with the USDA.
    o Is September too soon?
o Bay Bridge will be closed
  • Half day retreat – how do we use 4 hours effectively to address two big topics: sustainability and strengthening the initiative
  • To address sustainability, we need to look ahead – where is Shape Up headed not just in SF, but in the bigger conversation about chronic disease prevention. Where do we want to be? Where does SF fit in this bigger discussion?
o Need to develop talking points or “elevator pitch” to advocate for Shape Up with BOS.
  • Consider having inspirational speaker. RWJF, CDC, HHS
  • Maybe have a smaller “retreat” for strategic thinkers and follow up with a bigger call to action where we invite inspirational speakers.
  • Discuss best practices and case studies at retreat

Strategy Exercise
Shape Up has 4 strategies:

  1. policy and advocacy;
  2. awareness and education;
  3. programs and events; and
  4. data and research

Walk around the room and stand where:

  • you have participated in Shape Up
  • your organization does most of its work
  • where you think Shape Up does most of its work
  • where you think Shape Up should do more

Summary
Most people felt they’ve participated in programs and events/awareness and education, and that’s also where their organization does most of its work. Participants felt Shape Up should be doing more around data and research and policy and advocacy.

Discussion

  • None of our work is possible without data and research to demonstrate measurable outcomes. Need to illustrate a return on investment.
  • How can Shape Up allow members to accomplish your organization’s mission and at the same time, through Shape Up, move to another level.
  • Need best practices and data to show it is effective and to then affect policy.
o What sources of data are there? CHIS, YRBS
    o Challenges of self-reported data
o CHDP tracks objective data for kids
o What kind of data can we get for the retreat?
o Shape Up’s focus is so broad that it is a challenge to know what data to get.
  • So the focus of the retreat will be on longevity and sustainability. How do we become more results driven? How do we encourage more shared ownership? Shape Up is not just DCYF and DPH.
