Shape Up Updates:

  • Welcome to Amy Portello Nelson, Assistant Child Nutrition Coordinator at DCYF. Amy will be working on Shape Up projects such as the Walking Challenge and Soda Free Summer as well as the Summer Lunch and Afterschool Snack programs.
  • Walking Challenge – March 9 – May 15. We’ve had our first brainstorming Meeting on Monday. If you’re interested in helping to plan the launch, there will be a meeting next week. There are two new levels to the Walking Challenge this year – you can participate in the 10-week challenge to walk the coastline of CA, but if you complete that, you can continue across the country and then around the globe. We will keep the same model for the closing ceremony in May as last year – kids carnival at Kezar Stadium and an adult party at Sports Basement.
  • Summer Resource Fair – March 14 at Concourse Pavillion. 200-300 tables with camps, summer activities and more. Shape Up health fair will be on the second floor, and will provide fun and engaging activities, health screenings, etc. If you want to have a table, contact Amy (anelson@dcyf.org) or Libby (libby@dcyf.org).
  • RWJF Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities –  Shape Up is applying for the RWJF HKHC grant. It’s a 4 year grant that is focused on policy and environmental change to prevent childhood obesity. Very competitive process – awarding 60 applicants and 30 of them are high priority states, and 1 per region. We’ve convened 1 meeting with partners and have another on Friday afternoon to discuss our brief proposal which is due on 2/3. Base it on existing work of the Executive Directive that was issued at the Summit, and the policy analysis that will examine policies that unintentionally hinder opportunities for physical activity. Using the evidence-based and community driven Community Action Model, we’ll partner with an organization from African American and Latino populations to build capacity and allow them to select from our menu of policy recommendations that most applies to their community.
  • CCSF Shape Up @ Work – This has been sent in several e-blasts now, but Shape Up @ Work is doing a year of health-themed events. I’m passing around this matrix with the themes for each month. If you are interested or know of an appropriate organization that would be interested in doing a brief presentation, email Christina (Christina.goette@sfdph.org)
  • Summit De-brief – This is the first Coalition meeting since the summit in November. Evaluation results are posted on website under Shape Up Projects > Shape Up SF Summit. Other feedback:
    – Very engaging and enthusiastic
    – Better visibility for sponsor tables
    – Loved the beautiful venue
    – It was great to have the directors there to show their support
    – Mitch was inspiring
    – Is it possible to do workshops with Gil? – The speaker fee to bring Gil to SF was very high, but perhaps it is possible to set up a webinar
    – Enjoyed the summit but “didn’t get full breadth of scope of what Shape Up has accomplished since 2006”
  • 2009 Workplan – posted on website under Shape Up Projects. Using our Strategic Plan, we have pulled out projects to create a workplan for 2009. Please help fill in partners and contact us if you’d like to get involved.
  • CHDP Childhood Obesity Prevention Workgroup survey – One of our strategies in the healthcare environment of our strategic plan is to do provider trainings. Child Health and Disability Prevention Program’s Childhood Obesity Prevention Workgroup is in the early planning stages of putting on such a training for early 2010. We’d like to get your feedback. On the back of the evaluations is a short survey (3 questions), also available in SurveyMonkey http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=qNrA1rgNPSiIhQay6KcyRw_3d_3d PLEASE take a few minutes to give us some feedback on topics of interest, format, and provide contact information if you are interested in providing more input or would like to help plan the training. If you know someone who’d be interested in such a training, please forward them the SurveyMonkey link.

Kaiser Permanente San Francisco 2009 Community Benefits Guidelines, Lara Sallee
The biggest change to 2009 guidelines is that KPSF is only accepting one request per organization. Review the guidelines for the grant program or community event and activity support request to determine what makes most sense for your organization. All templates and forms are available on the website under Resources and Research
Letters of Interest are due February 17. If you have questions about concepts and programs, contact Lara at lara.sallee@kp.org. If you have questions about logistics or deadlines, contact Nancy Leung at nancy.leung@kp.org.
