Shape Up SF Updates:
Funding from The California Endowment
Shape Up SF’s Physical Activity Council was awarded a $162,000 grant by The California Endowment. The grant, to begin immediately, will allow PAC member and SFSU Professor of Kinesiology Susan Zieff,PhD, to conduct an in-depth analysis of local policies that help/hinder people’s ability to physically active. This grant builds on Dr. Zieff’s formative research in which Shape Up SF provided a supporting role. The policy analysis will focus specifically on those communities most impacted by chronic disease; as such, Shape Up will integrate feedback from African American and Latino communities in the development of final policy recommendations. Thanks to The California Endowment for their support of this important and innovative work.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation – Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities
Thank you to those of you who helped with the brainstorming and letters of support. Shape Up, under lead agency of Department of Children, Youth & Their Families, submitted an application for the RQJF HKHC grant. We will find out the week of March 9th if we are invited to submit a full proposal.
The proposal is built on existing work – the policy analysis that TCE is funding will be wrapping up when this begins, so we will have the preliminary findings of the policy analysis to help guide our work. At the Shape Up Summit in November 2008, the Mayor issued an Executive Directive on Physical Activity, Nutrition and Food Systems, so implementing that will also provide a framework for this proposal. We will form a panel to develop a menu of policy options and partner with a community-based organization from African American and Latino populations to implement the Community Action Model, which focuses on building capacity of communities to advocate for policy change.

Train for Charity
Crunch fitness organized a fundraiser and will be donating benefits to Shape Up SF. It was held on February 10, and all the personal trainers across the 7 SF Crunch locations donated a portion of their earnings to Shape Up from the day. The Mayor and the First Lady spoke at the event, and there was news coverage on local stations. Crunch had a brief segment on View from the Bay the day before, so before the event officially began on 2/10, they had raised $5k.

Summer Resource Fair
Date: Saturday March 14, 2009
Time: 10am-3pm
Location: Concourse Exhibition Center (8th & Brannan)

Every year, San Francisco’s Department of Children, Youth, and Their Families coordinates a Summer Resource Fair to provide families with a variety of information about everything for children and youth to do—all around the city and beyond—when school is out for the summer. The fair includes over 200 exhibitors to discuss and distribute information about camps, city services, classes, arts, sports, summer school, and youth jobs. There are even fun activities, cooking demos, and games to keep kids entertained while parents look around.
This year, Shape Up SF is proud to be part of the Summer Resource Fair to provide additional information to San Francisco residents about ways they can keep their families fit, fed, and healthy this summer. If you are part of a business or organization that would like to have a table or provide resources at this event, visit the website for guidelines and registration information.
The event is free and last year, over 4,000 people attended.

Soda Free Summer 2009
Developed and piloted by Alameda County in 2007, the Soda Free Summer/Rethink Your Drink campaign went regional in 2008 under the leadership of the Bay Area Nutrition and Physical Activity Collaborative, and the evaluation conducted by Field Research indicates that there is individual behavior as well as orgniaztional change as a result of the campaign.
We received some funding from First 5 SF to develop youth materials. We formed a committee of experts from early literacy, WIC, First 5, nutritionists, etc. to determine what tools/resources would be best to reach this age group. The committee came up with:

  • A book teachers could read to children (“Drink Water, Said the Otter”)
  • Quick facts to give to parents at sign-in/out sheets, wallet cards with fun facts
  • Activity sheets
  • Small incentive items.

Discussion:
Pediatricians will not be receiving these kits, but they will have the informational commitment cards to give to patients, as well as posters.
CHDP’s provider erducation network reaches 125+ pediatricians and dental providers

Featured Presentation: Policy Advocacy with a New Administration by Stefan Harvey, California Center for Public Health Advocacy
Background: The California Center for Public Health Advocacy (CCPHA) is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization that raises awareness about critical public health issues and mobilizes communities to promote the establishment of effective state and local health policies. CCPHA uses tools of public health — epidemiological research, grassroots organizing, public and policy maker education, and partnership building — to design policy solutions that address critical public health challenges facing California.
They currently focus on three main policy strategies: (1) physical education in public schools, (2) expanding access to healthy food in communities, and (3) assuring implementation of school nutrition standards.

Develop relationships with policy makers – Educate local elected officials about the importance of establishing policies to promote healthy eating and physical activity. We provide state and local elected officials with personalized data and technical assistance to help them develop needed policy reforms. Inform them about work of Shape Up SF and our successes. Schedule informatonal meetings with your district representative.
The economic situation makes it more difficult, but investing in prevention makes good sense.

Sign up for the Strategic Alliance for Health (staffed by the Prevention Institute). It’s free to sign up and is geared towards nutrition and physical activity professionals.
CCPHA routinely informs members about relevant bills. Join for free at www.publichealthadvocacy.org.

Member Announcements

  • Rec Park Commission budget hearing will be Friday, Feb 13, at 3 pm at City Hall, room 408.
80 staff will be laid off on February 27, and $11.7 million needs to be cut from the RPD budget. Some rec centers and parks will be closed, and staff will be moved around. They are brainstorming for more revenue-based programs. Rec Park facilities have traditionally been free to SF residents, but in the last 2 years, they have begun moving towards a fee-based model to save the department.
    Discussion:
Consider approaching the Juvenile Justice Commission and discussing the impact on them and the community if the rec centers are closed.
Email the Mayor, supervisors, and commission to express support for RPD.
    Check http://www.sfgov.org/site/recpark_index.asp for updates.
