Shape Up Updates
Workplan – last month, we were asked about how our work fits in with our workplan, so each month while we give our Shape Up updates, we will project the workplan behind us. It is also available on the website under Shape Up Projects (PDF). The workplan needs to be updated to include Safe Routes to School details, the training for Childhood Obesity in February 2010, etc.

Walking Challenge -
The Challenge officially ends on Friday, May 15, but the website will be available year-round if you’d like to continue to track your progress.

Closing ceremonies: Adults – May 27 from 5:30-7:30 at Sports Basement on Bryant St. Youth – May 28 from 3:30-5:30 at Kezar Stadium. Contact Amy at anelson@dcyf.org for information about volunteering.

Soda Free Summer –
SF FIRST 5 gave Shape Up money last year to develop materials for early childhood. The “early childhood kit” is centered around a book called “Drink Water! Said the Otter”, includes 4 activity sheets, posters, letters to parents and childhood care providers, stickers, and fun facts for parents.
We received sponsorship from SF PUC since we are promoting tap water. Our launch will be in June with Jennifer Siebel as our celebrity reader. If you have thoughts for funding production of the kits, let us know. We’d like to flood the market with this message. It is currently only available in English. The letters and activity sheets could be translated, but because the book is rhyming, it will need to be reworked for other languages.
Three other counties have commited to producing the book/kit – Santa Calara, Alameda, San Mateo. We’re considering getting an Otter costume and would take volunteers to wear it!

Sunday Streets -
There are 4 more Sunday Streets this year – 2 in the Mission and 2 connecting Golden Gate Park to the SF Zoo.  Thank you to Amy Adkins for staffing the Shape Up Soda Free Summer Table at the last Sunday Streets on Mother’s Day.

Volunteers -
Sunday Streets cannot happen without volunteers. Please sign up to help continue this great event that brings open space to different parts of the City.
Let us know if you want materials – there are brochures in English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese. limited supplies of stickers, tattoos, magnet clips.
Shape Up is being asked to promote Soda Free Summer at a number of different health and resource fairs. We welcome volunteers and Amy Portello Nelson has put together a great Shape Up kit with the necessary materials to promote Soda Free Summer. Contact Amy to “check-out” the kit. (anelson@dcyf.org)

Bike to School Day – May 28
Commuter Convoy Training on Saturday, May 16 at Monroe Elementary.
See winning poster for the first ever poster contest and other details for Bike to School Day at www.biketoschoolday.org

Shape Up @ Work
Working on a healthy vending machine policy.

Thank you to Kaiser Permanente for their continued support. Their $35K in sponsorship funding allows us to continue our work on Soda Free Summer, the Walking Challenge, Shape Up @ Work, helps fund the Stadium to Stadium Run, and more.

The Mayor went to DC last week to accept the RJWF Award for his work on Childhood Obesity Prevention, the first time they’ve ever awarded it to an elected official. At the ceremony, he did mention that SF would announce the soda fee within the next two weeks.

Literature Highlight:
Prevalence of Obesity Among US Preschool Children in Different Racial and Ethnic Groups Arch Pediatr Adolesc Med. 2009;163(4):344-348. (PDF)

Many studies show that disparities exist among racial/ethnic groups. This study looks at the age that these disparities first appear.
Conclusion: Racial/ethnic disparities in obesity are apparent in 4-year-old children. The highest prevalence being among American Indian/Native Alaskan Children.
Discussion: More interventions need to happen pre-birth with pregnant women, infant nutrition, breast feeding. Continue to change environments to make the healthy choice the easy and obvious one.
