Shape Up Updates

  • Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is honoring Mayor Gavin Newsom in May as a policy maker addressing childhood obesity. Shape Up submitted a brief proposal for RWJF’s Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities grant and we will find out on March 13 if we are invited back to submit a full proposal.
  • Chain Reaction – a three day spinning extravaganza to raise money for Health Corps. www.joinchainreaction.org
Shape Up will be leading a ride on March 17 from 3-4. Check their website for more information.
  • Train for Charity – Crunch fitness raised nearly $10K for Shape Up at their one-day Train for Charity event on February 10. The mayor spoke at the event and there are several clips on the Shape Up website. There was a lot of press coverage and KTVU did a special on Shape Up that aired on Saturday night. Joe Fonzi interviewed Christina and some students of Fairmont Elementary’s afterschool program. We will post the link on our website.
  • Summer Resource Fair – Saturday, March 14 at Concourse Exhibition Center. Come find out about all the summer programs and check out the first-ever Shape Up section.
  • Walking Challenge – started on Monday and we already have 121 teams. We had two successful outreach events – one at Golden Gate Park and one at Civic Center plaza near the farmer’s market. We reached about 1200 people.
  • Literature Highlights – We will be sharing a new research article/study/news at Coalition meetings to keep people informed. If you have something you’d like to share, email marianne.szeto@sfdph.org. Next month we hope to share the new study released by California Center for Public Health Advocacy on soda consumption in California. Any literature highlight will also be posted on the Shape Up website under Resources and Research.

Featured Presentation: 2008 Soda Free Summer Evaluation presented by Larry Bye and Stacey Wertlieb, Field Research
Some data highlights:

  • All respondents of evaluation returned a pledge card themselves or were parents of participants. 600 telephone surveys completed. Interviews were conducted in English, Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin.
  • Surveys started in July and would happen within 6 weeks of receiving a pledge card.
  • Recall findings showed that SFS is part of a larger moevement towards better health/obesity prevention.
  • The campaign was very family driven and spurred conversations about the campaign to others.
  • 47% of resopndents report drinking less soda than they did 3 months ago.
  • Data show that most people are replacing soda with water.
  • Support for policy change has stayed the same or increased since two years ago. Resondents support efforts for menu labelling, sugar fee, fee for sale of high fat/high calorie foods, banning unhealthy foods on school grounds, banning ads of unhealthy foods taht target youth, etc. Hispanic respondents were more likely to support these changes, but support was high among all ethnice groups.
  • Respondents felt that local government is not doing enough to combat childhood obesity.
  • Stakeholder survey (20 respondents). Stakeholders report reaching about 100k people through newsletters, radio shows, health fairs and outreach events, etc.

Things to consider for next evaluation:

  • Some people may have been excluded if they are already soda free. Consider a pledge to “stay soda free” rather than “become soda free”.
  • Many participants of the intervention were under 18 years old. Can minors participate in evaluation survey?

2009 Soda Free Summer  - The California Endowment funded the evaluation last year and we are currently looking for funding for this year.
the CCPHA will release results of a study on soda consumption in California and the SFS campaign will launch after the study is released. We are developing a pre-k kit featuring a book, Drink Water, Said the Otter.
