Walk and Roll to School Day Debrief by Nicole Schneider, Executive Director of Walk SF.
Walk SF is one of the organizations in the SF Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Partnership, and responsible for organizing a central media event highlighting one of our SRTS sites. This year, we saw a 40% increase in school participation. 76 schools and nearly 13,000 students participated in Walk and Roll to School Day. The central media event was hosted at ER Taylor, the largest elementary school in SFUSD. Special Guests included: California State Senator, Mark Leno, District 9 Supervisor, David Campos, and leadership from city departments:
- Rec and Park
- SFPD
- Department of Environment
- SFMTA
- Mayor’s Office
Special Presentation: SFUSD PE Assessment Preliminary Findings
Hannah Thompson, UCSF PhD(c) and Graduate Researcher at UCB presented the preliminary findings of our SFUSD PE Assessment, covering:
- Why physical activity/Physical Education
- Our strategic alliance – SFUSD, Shape Up SF and researchers at UCSF/UC Berkeley
- 2011 study resulted in:
- Funding for PE specialists increased 25% during the 2011-12 school year.
- Funding for PE specialists increased 78% during the 2012-13 school year.
- 2013 follow-up study – methods
- Successes – While not statistically significant, we saw changes in the right direction since our assessment in 2011:
- Increase in number of schools that met the CA PE minute mandate, based on teacher’s schedules
- Increase in percent of classtime spent in MVPA
- Increase in scheduled minutes of PE per week
- Increase in average minutes of MVPA per week
-
Interviewees reported district-level increases in priority and funding for PE.
-
Collecting and disseminating local data contributed to the alliance’s achievements.
- Opportunities:
- The majority of elementary students are not getting the required state-mandated minutes of weekly PE.
- No changes in regulations or accountability for PE were noted.
- Primary recommendations
- Increase the number of scheduled and actual PE minutes per week
- Implement district-level accountability measures
- Next steps:
- Presenting at principal meetings in November
- Presenting to the Board of Education in January
- Potential second follow-up study in 2015?
- Sonoma County is replicating our PE study.
- Invite Superintendent to Coalition meeting.
- How do eliminate the disparities? Low income and communities of color continue to get lower levels of MVPA.
- Why is California mandated number of minutes lower than NASPE’s mandate?
- Not convinced that teachers/administrators truly believe that physical activity will increase academic performance.
- Hannah got funding to do a study of high dose of physical activity right before standardized testing.
- Shape Up SF’s longterm goal is for a measure of fitness to be in a school’s Academic Performance Index.
- Shape Up SF is influencing the revision of SFUSD’s Wellness Policy to incorporate increased value, accountability for PE and PA during the school day.
- Need an awareness campaign for PE.
- Present this data to DCYF/Afterschool for All.

Shape Up SF Coalition Website: www.shapeupsfcoalition.org
www.shapeupsf.org is on city servers. A new DPH policy requires DPH programs to be hosted on DPH servers. The Coalition took this opportunity to create a separate Coalition website , and this site will be the one with latest updates, moving forward. Please explore the site and sign up for our newsletter! Marianne led an activity to explore the site and the winner will be announced in the November newsletter. Chuck matched the challenge for anyone who answers all 7 questions correctly. The challenge is only open to those who attended the meeting.
